How Do Air Filters Protect Your Compressed Air System?

While compressed air systems work hard to remove all contaminants from the delivered air, it’s not always 100% accurate in its attempt. That’s where the air filter comes into play. Some of the most common contaminants found in compressed air include oil, moisture, and dust. 

A properly installed air filtering system serves as the first line of defence to protect the compressor and the attached tools from contamination and damage. 

How do particulate and moisture air filters for air compressors work?

In basic terms, the filter acts like a sieve. It works to catch contaminants larger than the tiny holes in the filter surface, which prevents them from polluting compressed air.  

Here are some of the most common types of air filtering systems: 

Coalescing filtration

Coalescing filters act to remove many microscopic contaminants from the air – including aerosols, dust and oil. Instead of simply trapping particles, coalescing filters force tiny droplets of oil or water to merge (coalesce) into larger droplets. These droplets then become heavy enough to fall to the bottom of the filter housing, as opposed to moving through the system and entering the compressed air.  

Water separators

When air is compressed by the system, it quickly increases in temperature. But once it cools back down again, the moisture in the air condenses into minuscule water droplets. Water separators circulate the airflow inside the filter housing, which pushes the water droplets towards the sides of the housing. The remaining moisture collects at the bottom in a drain chamber and is removed from the system. 

Activated carbon filter systems

Activated carbon filters remove very fine particulates, such as odours and gaseous contaminants, from compressed air.  

As compressed air travels through the filter, these particulates are attracted to the tiny pores on the carbon surface and stick to it – a process known as adsorption. This prevents them from moving through the system and into the compressed air delivery.

As the air drawn into your compressor isn’t 100% clean, as contaminants embed themselves into the air system. Air filters work to prevent particulates from reaching sensitive components. As a result, there’s less risk of these foreign pollutants causing internal wear and tear and blockages.

Filters prevent contaminants from entering the central system, which promotes a steadier and free-flowing air supply. Over time, you’ll notice a significant difference in your compressor’s energy efficiency and operational costs. 

This is because contaminants force your air compressor to work harder than necessary. As particulates build up within the internal parts, air flow becomes restricted. As such, the compressor needs to operate at a much higher pressure to achieve the same output.

Filters prevent contaminants from entering the system. Without this protection, these particles can gradually damage internal components, leading to increased wear on internal parts. Without one, your system becomes highly susceptible to breakdowns. By removing harmful debris from the airflow, an air filtering system helps keep the internal components in good working order.
